Helping Urban Youth Succeed

Helping to prepare the kids of Rochester for success later in life – it’s a big job and so important.  That’s why Quad A for Kids must do absolutely the best job possible.  Our board is continually looking at every activity Quad A undertakes so that it can have the greatest impact.

Consider the job of Executive Director. After the recent retirement of Sandy Skiles, we knew we had to find someone who knew the city, who understood how to motivate kids, and who could establish effective partnerships both with other agencies and with our donors.  After a thorough search, we were fortunate to find Adam McFadden.  His credentials reveal much about him.  He grew up in our city and knows firsthand the problems our youth encounter.  In addition, as a member of the Rochester City Council, he is already a committed Rochester leader.

Consider the School #34 Neighborhood After-school Program.  We measured many successes in the first year of the program: attendance up; suspensions down; behaviors improved.  Yet Kathy Fromel, our board member and volunteer program director, was convinced that we could do more.  We have extended the program another hour each day so that kids will have meaningful activities until 5:30 pm.  We have kept the best of last year’s activities and have added new project-based activities based on recommendations of the Harvard Family Research Projects.  With the cooperation of the school staff and district personnel, we are building a premier after-school program which is a model for others area schools to follow.

Consider School #30 Program.  This is our "second" NAP school, now expanded to include six activities this year – up from four last year.  Through this program we continue our close alliance with Cameron Community Ministries.  The school staff enthusiastically supports the program as it continues to expand and improve and becomes a candidate for daily programming.

Consider our citywide programs.  We continue to support more than 15 programs, including: Flower City Soccer League, Step-Off, Genesee Center for the Arts, Baden Street Football and Bush Mango African Dance.  This year we welcome newcomer Sojourner House "Study Buddy".

Quad A for Kids board members take great pride in helping Rochester’s youth to succeed.  The accomplishments presented above demonstrate how we continue to strive for improvement in all areas.  Thank you for your support which makes this possible.
